The Kings of Hip Hop compiled by DJ Premier & Mr Thing
If one youth movement has been pre-eminent in the shaping of popular culture in the last twenty-five years, it is hip hop. Born in the mid 70’s as a soundtrack to block parties in New York, it spread across America and then the world, constantly evolving & reinventing itself. From Afrika Bambaataa’s Zulu Nation to gansta rap, hip hop has been used as party music and as protest music, to provoke and to enlighten. Today it is a multi-million-pound industry that dominates record sales worldwide, and influences international fashion, language and youth culture.
