Memphis 70 - The city's funk & soul in the decade after Otis

The death of Otis Redding in late 1967 was a watershed in the sound of Memphis soul. He had been the figurehead and defining figure as Stax had taken a distinctly gritty take on soul to the top of the US charts. "Memphis 70" shows what happened next as local musicians emerged from Otis' shadow and created new and exhilarating sounds. In typical FifthMicrophone style we take the road less travelled to bring a selection of sought-after rarities and unreleased gems that perfectly reflect the era. This is soul music for the true connoisseur.

Kon & Amir present Off Track Vol. 2: Queens

As with their previous collection Off Track Vol. 1: Bronx, don’t be concerned that you might not recognise many of the artists, just trust these DJs. And if the Bronx was hot, you’ll want to get the next train to Queens. Kon’s cramed his disc with 11 pre-house disco soul monsters that’ll force you to get your plastic out to book up for the next Southport Weekender whatever the state of the credit crunch. His tracks really represent the farthest reaches of the underground scene of the 70s and some of which are augmented with some edit work to expand the grooves. Amir takes CD2 in a totally different but absolutely dance orientated direction. Now if Queen’s is as African as Amir’s CD, this Borough is a whole melting pot of sounds from the mother continent with diversions via Jamaica, Brazil and big Afro-Cuban beats. All of them are great, and very different than the usual bag of material that ever gets reissued.

Julius Brockington - Sophisticated Funk

"As the music spectrum revolves around the world, colors brighten. Turning and circling, warmth increases as the communications increase. Sesitivity and attraction to the human ear is important to those who have a genuine appreciation for music. The organ is one instrument which is used to emcompass you - the everyday people. Sit back, relax with a glass of wine, and hear what is meant by "Sophisticated Funk"."
-Dede Dabney
R&B Editor of record world magazine

Gettin' Soulful - A Swingin' Combination Of Vampisoul Records Smash Hits

During the sixties, the traffic in both directions between Spanish Harlem and the other mythic Harlem, that of rhytym and blues, was intense. Visions of paradise - Benny Johnson

This is a first time reissue on any format anywhere in the world for this heavily demanded indie soul album from 1973! Visions of paradise is the only album by vocalist Benny Johnson, recorded with some totally great backings from funk legend Julius Brockington and his United Chair combo. For the session, Brockington chose a warm, organ-drenched sound that's a fair bit like some of the best work coming out of Hi Records at the same time, although without as much of a southern soul approach overall. Johnson's vocals have a beautifully crackling Al Green or Barry White sort of quality, one that's honest and human, but still smooth enough to fit the mode of the music. The set's got some excellent mellow soul numbers that are worth the price of admission alone. Tracks slide out beautifully with a really gentle sound, and bubble up with a tremendous amount of soul. But there's also some fuller, more upbeat tunes too, groovers that have made the album a favorite overseas for years. This very hard to find and in demand vinyl fetches almost ₤200 at auctions...thanks to Soul Brother for releasing this album!

Tracklist:

1. Visions Of Paradise
2. Absolutely Positively Baby
3. Baby I Love You
4. Stop Me
5. Give It Up
6. Second To None
7. Won't You Stay
8. It's Yours Baby
9. Please Come Back
10. I Just Got To Know
