Madvillainy 2 - The Madlib remix

Hip hop, since its inception, has been breathing new life into used musical ideas, and the most obvious route it takes in doing this is audio sampling.

Some producers sample music listeners will recognize from pop radio, but Madlib specializes in turning ears on to music that didn't have much attention to begin with--looping beats from the unheard and unsampled LPs filling dusty milk crates everywhere.

Madlib is up to his usual tricks these days, but he's taking on a big project: reworking his most critically acclaimed album, Madvillainy.

Let's clear the air; this album is a lot more like remodeling than remixing. For the most part, MF DOOM's lyrics have remained in tact; they're the frame Madlib worked around to recontextualize the album.

What was once the laid back and smokey "Figaro" has been renamed "No Brain," and given a faster tempo with a 60s soul backing track. Even MF DOOM's vocals are from a different and more forceful recording take. These subtleties are what really make this LP seem new to anyone familiar with the original.

The off-kilter "Shadows of Tomorrow" was changed into "Light of the Past," and mixed with a beat that matches the lyrics in terms of left field obscurity.

It's sad to see some beats go. For example, the backing tracks to "Meat Grinder," "Curls," and "Strange Ways" are part of what made the original so great. However, Madlib doesn't change the tracks without finding beats that are sufficient and thought-provoking. Some songs like "America's Most Blunted" don't make the cut onto Madvillainy 2, and all of the original instrumentals are replaced with new ones.

It's a ballsy move, but Madlib probably knows any alteration of Madvillainy is bound to bring both praise and disdain. Besides, the latter is only a reaction that will come from fans who have heard the original, because this remix--without a doubt--could work as an enjoyable introduction to Madvillain, too.

The beats are new, but what's important is the original LP's ideas have stayed the same: very few choruses, shorter songs, jazz-influenced beats, obscure verbal samples, and the overall feel of a mixtape. It's a format that isn't very radio-friendly, but it still managed to receive praise from numerous music magazines and websites.

In the larger scheme of things, Madvillainy hasn't exactly changed things. However, the LP's mainstream attention should get producers and MCs thinking about treating hip hop like an art form again, and work toward breaking away from the song structures and lyrical themes plaguing the genre today.

The second in a trilogy of Columbus, Ohio soul albums to be issued on Numero’s Asterisk imprint comes from the twisted pen and mind of Norman Whiteside. His lone album, under the pseudonym Wee, is firmly ensconced in Innervisions-era Stevie Wonder, with nary a trace of his work as a writer for Bill Moss’ Capsoul label a few years prior. Smooth, sexy, and synthy, You Can Fly On My Aeroplane is a peerless sprawling psychedelic soul concept album; full of ‘70s excess and cocaine charm. Guitar phase, strong synth and slippery bass push Whiteside’s distinct tenor (and even stranger falsetto) afloat. It’s a rather fat reissue, too, including more "pheromone funk" outtakes and alternates than true album tracks. The original nine song LP has been expanded to nineteen, including seven previously unreleased panty soakers. Lovers rejoice.

Kon & Amir present Off Track Vol. 2: Queens

As with their previous collection Off Track Vol. 1: Bronx, don’t be concerned that you might not recognise many of the artists, just trust these DJs. And if the Bronx was hot, you’ll want to get the next train to Queens. Kon’s cramed his disc with 11 pre-house disco soul monsters that’ll force you to get your plastic out to book up for the next Southport Weekender whatever the state of the credit crunch. His tracks really represent the farthest reaches of the underground scene of the 70s and some of which are augmented with some edit work to expand the grooves. Amir takes CD2 in a totally different but absolutely dance orientated direction. Now if Queen’s is as African as Amir’s CD, this Borough is a whole melting pot of sounds from the mother continent with diversions via Jamaica, Brazil and big Afro-Cuban beats. All of them are great, and very different than the usual bag of material that ever gets reissued.

Julius brockington was an early 70s figure who not only cut some wild keyboard funk, but was also head of the A & R Department for Perceptions Today Records in New York City. "Sophisticated Funk" is the first of three albums from this proficient musician.

Visions of paradise - Benny Johnson

This is a first time reissue on any format anywhere in the world for this heavily demanded indie soul album from 1973! Visions of paradise is the only album by vocalist Benny Johnson, recorded with some totally great backings from funk legend Julius Brockington and his United Chair combo. For the session, Brockington chose a warm, organ-drenched sound that's a fair bit like some of the best work coming out of Hi Records at the same time, although without as much of a southern soul approach overall. Johnson's vocals have a beautifully crackling Al Green or Barry White sort of quality, one that's honest and human, but still smooth enough to fit the mode of the music. The set's got some excellent mellow soul numbers that are worth the price of admission alone. Tracks slide out beautifully with a really gentle sound, and bubble up with a tremendous amount of soul. But there's also some fuller, more upbeat tunes too, groovers that have made the album a favorite overseas for years. This very hard to find and in demand vinyl fetches almost ₤200 at auctions...thanks to Soul Brother for releasing this album!

Earthbound is the twelfth album by the group "The Fifth Dimension", who were known for their Pop hits (aquarius/let the sunshine in). This is the last album to feature the group's original line up. Released originally as a lp on the label "ABC Records", the album remains the only one from the original 5th lineup not yet released on CD. While this album was not commercially successful, it remains a cult favorite among many 5th Dimension fans who consider it among their best work. Instant Funk - Instant Funk

Instant Funk, also known as The Music Machiene, were originally back up singers for Lou Rawls, Loletta Holloway, The O'Jays, MFSB, Curtis Mayfield, and Evelyn Champagne King. After MFSB, Instant Funk were probably the second most famous backing group from the Philly scene. This album is their second, and although it has enough funky disco breaks, there are a few goofy numbers that should be avoided.

Freddie Robinson - Off the cuff

We've heard Freddie Robinson...and this is "hands down" the best album of his. Freddie Robinson is well known among both Blues fans and Jazz, however, during the early 70s, Freddie cut some monster solo funky recordings for Stax, recordings that had a bluesy guitar in the middle, and a nice funky rhythm backing the soulful lyrics. This album best showcases his talent.

Westbound Funk

What a funky treat! Came across this in a TINY record shop, and simply glancing at the tracklist encouraged me to purchase. The title's almost redundant, as the words "Westbound" and "Funk" mean virtually the same thing. From the late 60s through the mid 70s, Westbound was one of the key record labels in the sound of raw heavy funk, working with hit groups like Funkadelic, Bobby Franklin's Insanity, The Counts, and the Ohio Players to craft a sound that laid the blueprint for countless other groups of the time, and also featuring a wealth of obscurer artists with an even harder-hitting sound. The key styles of Westbound and related jazz label Eastbound were heavy and fuzzy ones, picking up off the heady and trippy styles of the late 60s Detroit scene, mixing things up with MC5 guitars, Norman Whitfield bass, and deep underground Tribe-styled jazz touches. This 20 track masterpiece is a brilliant summation of the important Westbound sound. It includes a few hits, some funky 45 classics, and an even bigger number of tracks we might not have heard otherwise. The notes are great, the tunes are super-funky, and the whole thing's one of the best funky collections you could ever hope to purchase.

Rare funk liberation : a seriously rare set

This is a monster batch of lost funky 45s put together with the kind of sound you'd expect from Goldmine, purveyors of funky madness comps like The Sound Of Funk and Fantastic Funk. This one's got an especially good batch of tracks, with a huge bunch of stone cold cuts that have never appeared on other funk compilations. There's lots of heavy guitars on this one, and many tracks are instrumental, with a very fast, hard-wailing groove.

Keite Young -- Rise and Fall of Keite Young

This album is simply too good to be posted on just one music blog. So good infact, that it is "FifthMicrophone" considered best release of the year. The following excerpt is taken from thefifthmicrophone's sister blog: Soul'd Out

"In a crowd, he'd be easy to spot: the one standing just apart from the pack, inquisitive and meditative, his quiet interrupted by his own deafening thoughts. Such is the music of Keite Young. A grandson of blues guitarist "Big Daddy Young", Young cleverly chronicles life's yin and yang, the good and the bad, sanctified and irreverent. He lives it; as a young man, he often exudes the wistful contemplation of an old soul whoose humble ambition is to communicate to the masses; and as an ordained minister since age 15, Young makes music that often stirs both the spirit and flesh.

When asked what musician(s) have influenced him, Young lists a fairly diverse style of groups: Led Zeppelin, Sly & the Family Stone, AC-DC, Howlin' Wolf, Parliament Funkadelic, Al Green, and the Beatles. His debut album, "The Rise and Fall of Keite Young" contains such a vast difference in genres of music; each song has a sound ranging from funk, soul, rock, blues, to gospel, and in every song he manages to fuse styles together, thus producing a smooth, funky laid back groove.

Upon listening to the album, Keite strikes me as someone who could be referred to as the next Sly Stone. A gritty voice, talented on different instruments, and weird, funky lyrics;

"if we were alone/i would kiss you on your lips/and on your ear/baby we could make love from the chandelier"

This album was originally due to be released in early July, but the date got pushed back to August 28th, with a few early copies sliding out of the hands of Hidden Beach Recordings. Unfortunately the album will be a bit difficult to find in your average music store, however the album will be available for purchase online.

Heavy funk galore...and easily two of the best titles in the massive Super Funk series. These albums seem to go deeper than all the previous volumes, really digging down for some obscure tracks that push past the obvious funky 45 standards, to include some lost gems from rare sources in the southern scene. The set's awash in hard drums, fuzzy bass, tripped out guitar, and lots of rootsy deep soul vocals, stepping from track to track with a quality level that beats most other funky 45 collections on the market.

Truly a blistering batch of underground singles that serve up some of the roughest funk of their generation. We'll be honest in saying that we'd only heard a few of the tracks here before and our hats are off to BGP for taking this already-great series and making it go even deeper...far past familiar funk classics that usually get showcased on the label, and much more into the realm of the crate-digging underground, or the ebay-rarity stratosphere. A handful of cuts here are previously unreleased (never even issued on wax back in the day) and the rest are all pretty darn hard to find too, and all plenty darn great from a musical perspective.

I've featured 1 of 3 BOCA 45 albums sometime around the start of this blog, here is yet another:

BOCA 45 has two passions, football and music, more specifically turntableism. He is 'Boca' after the Argentinean football team: Boca Juniors, and '45' after the revolutions per minute that his beloved slabs of wax make on the turntable.

Boca 45, aka Scott Hendy from Dynamo Productions drops one of his best productions to date. ”Pitch Sounds” is his debut full-length album. Hendy has toured Australia, Europe and the USA extensively as part of Dynamo Productions, having previously worked with Andy Smith of Portishead. He delivers dance floor shaking sets which take in hip-hop beats cut with classic rock & acappellas scratched over long-forgotten funk breaks. The result is a really catchy, funky cool sound. The album is out on Grand Central Records only in the UK.

Christian Kon Taylor and Amir Abdullah are two of the worlds most respected crate diggers. Their On Track tapes and Kings of Diggin' are the definitive compilations of their kind. Collecting wax since the tender age of 5, Kon is an established DJ, producer and engineer, while Amir, a vinyl addict since 1986, DJs and is Sales Manager at ABB Records.
The duo met in 1996, shopping for breaks at Bostons Biscuithead Records. Months later they recorded their first On Track mixtape on a Fisher Price tape deck, and the lessons began. Their record knowledge, as well as their digging services have been sought after by the most respected names in the game, including Shady Records, Diamond, Pete Rock and Lord Finesse. According to Finesse, Kon and Amir are two of the most extraordinary but underrated beat diggers in the game. To that end, in 2004, Kon and Amir opened On Track Productions, Inc. which offers their digging services to beatmakers and producers in need of the rarest pieces of wax. World Psychedelic Classics 3: The Funky Fuzzy Sounds of West Africa ~ Love's a Real Thing

What an amazing, far-out listen! A really mind-bending collection of African grooves, one that digs deep into the West African scene of the early 70s and comes up with a massive batch of tunes that really opens up our understanding of the music. The sound here isn't just 70s Afro Funk, the tunes include a range of tripped-out styles that make the best use of guitar, psychedelic production, and important influences from American soul artists at the time. The sound is chromatically complex while also being tripped-out and funky, in a way that complicates the rhythms without totally taking them apart. If you've dug the tunes on previous sets like Africa Funk or Ghana Soundz, this is one to take that sound to the next level and really open up your ears.

Jimmy McGriff. The man who at the age of 16, having played the bass, the drums, alto sax and some other instruments, was still trying to find `his' instrument. It took the invention of the Hammond B3 to finally give Jimmy an instrument that "would push me more than I could push it." ELECTRIC FUNK is one of Jimmy's funkiest albums ever; a sweet batch of short, hard, and funky cuts. The album's great all the way through; tight arrangements by Horace Ott, who also plays electric piano on the set, making for a clean, cool 2-keys kind of groove, and some amazing drumming.

Afreaka - Demon Fuzz

Messed-up funky jazz from an obscure early 70s UK group that existed only for 8 months. The album that really lives up to its trippy cover. The tracks are all long and stretched out with lots of organ, sax, and spaced out drums. The overall style is a mix of dub-heavy funk, Afro jazz, and a bit of jazz rock jamming. There's a bit of vocals on the album, but overall most of the set is instrumental, in a really right on and progressive style that everyone seems to love. I've heard from various people this is one of the best records they have heard.

Recently I came across a comp I've been hearing about: Funk Spectrum: Real funk for real people. The latter consists of 3 volumes, mixed by pete rock, keb dargie, dj shadow, and josh davis.

Upon first listening, I wasn't overly impressed, it struck me as an album with a few very good tracks, some decent tracks, and lots of "fillers". I decided to cut alot of the tracks, and post ones I felt had a really good quality and feel. The songs that were left are hard, groovy funk tracks, ones that a funk connoisseur, or dj will certainly appreciate.

I stumbled on this impossible-to-find record in a small local vinyl store. A really good listen. The Strange Games… series which began in the summer of 1997, has supplied us with a blueprint for modern R&B and rap music. Every now and then I come across the occasional amazing movie worth recommending. This film is highly recommended for those who enjoy human drama in shades of grey. There's no good guy/bad guy thing happening here. It's people dealing with the hand that destiny has given them, and trying to find their way. It is full of emotional honesty and plausibility that you can buy into.

The movie is a coming-of-age drama about a boy growing up in Astoria, N.Y., during the 1980s. In a series of flashbacks we see the young Dito, his parents, his four closest friends, and his girl Laurie, as each tries to navigate family, race, loyalty, sex, coming of age, violence, and wanting out. As his family becomes ill, and his friends end up dead, on drugs or in prison, he comes to believe he has been saved from their fate by various so-called saints, and returns home to Astoria, Queens, after a 15-year absence. The story is based on the memoirs of director Dito Montiel.

MFSB (short for "Mother, Father, Sister, Brother") were a loose conglomeration of studio musicians who provided backing tracks for dozens of seminal Philidelphia recordings in the 1970s, and later released successful songs and albums as a standalone recording act.
Assembled by the production team of Gamble & Huff, MFSB was the house band for their Philadelphia International Records label and provided the signature smooth Philadelphia sound for many acts including the O'Jays, The Spinners, Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes, and The Stylistics, Curtis Mayfield, Johnnie Taylor, War, Archie Bell & the Drells, and countless others.
In 1974, Philadelphia International released an instrumental track which had been recorded by the band as the theme for the television show Soul Train as a single. The record, titled "TSOP (The Sound of Philadelphia)" was a hit on both the pop and R&B charts, and launched a recording career for the band under their own name. MFSB albums and singles were released for the rest of the decade, and their material later served as ample material for sampling by hip-hop musicians.

Mavis Staples - We'll never turn back

As musical activists in the 1960s civil rights movement, the Staple Singers were powerful voices for equality and change. And more than 40 years after Pops's daughter Mavis spent a night in a West Memphis, Arkansas, jail at the behest of a racist cop, she still remembers the terror of the experience, as well as the counsel of Dr. Martin Luther King. That episode is at the centerpiece of "My Own Eyes," one of the most moving offerings on this collection of songs of racial struggle in the '50s and '60s, produced by guitarist Ry Cooder and featuring backing from the original Freedom Singers and Ladysmith Black Mambazo. Throughout, the album proves both emotionally chilling and spiritually uplifting. On J.B. Lenoir's "Down in Mississippi" and Marshall Jones's "In the Mississippi River," for example, Cooder makes fine use of pounding percussion and snaky electric guitar to capture the danger and fear inherent in the Deep South at the time, while the title song and "Jesus Is on the Main Line" draw on gospel and the traditional framework of church hymns to promise positive solutions. Staples, who adlibs on several cuts, connecting the injustice of yesterday to the continuing marginalization of blacks in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, remains a remarkable performer, employing a throaty sensuality that rises from a deep well of tremulous emotion. What Mavis has chosen to do in this album is to reinterpret a number of classic anthems from the Civil Rights movement as well as including several compositions of her own, all of which are impeccably rendered by an extraordinary voice which may have lost some of its youthful shine but has gained a weary wisdom and lost none of its fierce commitment to tell it like it is, without frills but plenty of class. Whether or not you share Staples' beliefs or consider yourself a long time fan of the Staples Singers, this is a phenomenal set of songs. If Mavis' voice wasn't enough the album is permeated by the magic of Ry Cooder's production who could not have been a better choice to give these songs, both, their gravitas and their groove. This is Cooder at his best, laying a sound as dense and ominous as a Louisiana swamp or as angelic as Gospel longings, as the songs require. Another musician worthy of note is drummer Jim Keltner, Ry's compadre for so many years, who inhabit these songs with a powerful beat that will resonate in your chest even after the album's over. All in all, this is not only a great album but a necessary one. What these songs may reawaken or introduce you to are words that have not lost their significance nor their relevance.

Azymuth Remastered & Remixes

A beautifully remastered version of the first album by Azymuth presented here with a full bonus CD of new remix tracks! The core album is one of the sweetest electric records to come from 70s Brazil; the fabulous first effort from the Azymuth trio, and work that's hardly been matched again. Although the group here have plenty of the warm keyboard touches of their more famous later work, they're also moving in territory that's a bit more abstract as well, using some noisier electronics amidst the smoother ones, to create a style that's somewhere between fusion, electric funk, and some of the more soaring Brazilian rhythms of the post-bossa years. There's more than a few great breaks and samples on the set that ticks all the buttons as a classic package that should appeal to fans of jazz/hip hop and new jazz.

Incredible Bongo Band

Michael Viner was a Bongo player who put together a bunch of session musicians to record some percussion heavy tracks for the soundtrack to the film, 'The Thing with Two Heads'. The 1972 film's premise is that a racist white doctor has his head transplanted onto the body of a black convict.

Viner continued with his pet project, now called 'Michael Viner's Incredible Bongo Band', and in 1973 released an album on the Pride label (an MGM subsidiary that he ran). The album, 'Bongo Rock', features 'Bongolia' as well as a version of The Shadows' 'Apache', featuring a seminal drum break, a favorite of early Hip Hop DJs and one of the most sampled ever. In 1974 they released a follow up, 'Return of The Incredible Bongo Band'. Other than Viner and Botkin, some of the musicians who contributed include Jim Gordon, King Errisson, Bobbye Hall, Hal Blaine, Glen Campbell, Freda Payne and even Ringo Starr.

Devin The Dude is a Dirty South underground legend. Appearing on such classics as Scarface's F. Friends and Dr. Dre's F. You...Devin has never been outshined. This album sounds high. It is so free flowing and laid back...you can let it play right through. There are no upbeat uptempo tracks no sir. I believe you have to be pretty laid back as a person to truly appreciate this album. Devin's rhyme style is humorous at times and he tells stories most of the album. His voice is better than most with his slow smooth talk/rap over smooth beats. He shows he can get down with some of the best on Some Of Em with Xzibit and Nas. Just Trying Ta Live just makes you say ahhhhhh....I mean there's really not much to explain about it. This album is easily one of the years best and you should definitely check it out.

James Ramey, or Baby Huey (named after the cartoon duck) , a chicago native, was a protege of Curtis Mayfield (who produced this album and released it via his Curtom imprint) and somewhat of an eccentric. He was 400 pounds, had a huge afro, a King Tut beard and dressed flamboyantly. The picture on the back of this album is priceless : him in a pinstripe suit with a huge ankle length robe over it standing reading a cookbook.

Huey performed live, but recorded a handul of singles with the Babysitters and died of a drug related heartattack aged 26 before this album came out in 1970. He took his cues from Chicago groups like The Impressions (the group Curtis Mayfield fronted before going solo), Mayfield himself, the psychedelic blues albums by Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf released on legendary Chicago label Chess Records in the late 60's and then mixed them with some raw, ballsy Stax soul via Booker T & The M.G's melting pot to create something that only Mayfield, Issac Hayes, James Brown, Funkadelic and Sly Stone managed to better. You have the driving, gritty soul of "listen to me" & "hard times", the funked-up psychedelic blues of "mighty mighty" & "runnin'" (which Mayfield wrote and later recorded but the Huey original is the definitive version), instrumental jams like "mama get yourself together" & "one dragon, two dragon" and, finally, you have what have to be two of the greatest cover versions ever recorded : his funked up version of "california dreamin'" and his staggering 9 minute version of Sam Cooke's "a change is gonna come" which has to be heard to be believed.

Rap fiends should definately check this album as it's full of really good breaks. If you're a fan of blues or Hendrix and would like to start investigating soul/funk but find James Brown too dancefloor friendly or Marvin Gaye too polished then give Baby Huey: The Living Legend a listen.

Calle 13 will change your mind about reggaeton and Latin hip-hop. The Puerto Rican duo of emcee Residente and producer Visitante throw out all conventions of urban Latin music on their sophomore release. While establishing a large following with their danceable, reggaeton-tinged self-titled debut, Residente o Visitante finds the group adopting the musical styling of many Latin American nations, and adding their distinct hip-hop flavor accented by Residente’s unique voice and flow. The result is one of the best Latin hip-hop albums recorded, punctuated by excellent and eclectic production, and some of the raunchiest and most comical lyrics put to recorded media.

Residente o Visitante is a tour of Latin America through the eyes of two demented hip-hop heads. “Tango De Pecado” employs the typical orchestral backing of an Argentine tango, paired with Residente’s tongue-in-cheek tales of Satanism and sin, demanding listeners to dance atop volcanic lava. “La Cumbia de Los Aburridos” satirizes club wallflowers and party-poopers with the accordion and brass of typically Colombian cumbia music. The tour continues with the Mexican-influenced, tuba-heavy “La Fokin’ Moda,” and the Brazilian samba-flavored “Un Beso De Desayuno.” The latter may be Calle 13’s first quasi-sincere love song, but often employs Dali-esque levels of surrealism in its storytelling.

Although Residente’s nonsensical and sexually-explicit lyrics are often overshadowed by Visitante’s picturesque melodies, Residente is unafraid to remind us of his hip-hop roots and political undertones. “Sin Exagerar” pairs the duo with Puerto Rico’s best rapper, Tego Calderon, for a funky and danceable display of their lyrical skills. Calle 13 pays tribute to their birthplace on “La Crema,” a horn-driven head-nodder. The shining moment, though, is “Pal Norte.” On the track, the duo team with Cuban hip-hop trio Orishas for a fiery guitar-based tirade on the issues of Latin American immigration.

Although it’s easy for Calle 13 to be grouped into the same musical categories as Daddy Yankee, the duo actually belongs in a much smaller and more elite category. Along with artists like Tego Calderon, Orishas, and Ozomatli, Calle 13 are amongst the few actually pushing the boundaries of Latin music, blending the best of hip-hop with the music and spirit of hundreds of years of Latin culture.

As ‘difficult’ third albums go, this disc by the guitar-toting desert blues rebels sounds pretty damn effortless. Happily, producer and long term associate Justin Adams hasn’t fixed what isn’t broken, although there’s an extra layer or two of guitars and a more expansive sound, which should pull in a wider audience. Tinariwen are still riding those rolling traditional Touareg grooves, decorated with disarmingly simple lead riffs and counter-riffs, backed by overlapping meshes of chopping rhythm guitars, hand claps and ululating choruses. Their pentatonic scales will instantly give any delta blues fan the goosebumps, and they make no secret of their ‘Western’ influences – Hendrix, Robert Plant et al. – who all drew on similar sources.

Like its predecessor Amassakoul, Aman Iman successfully balances the upbeat with the plaintive, and density of sound with sparseness – although nothing is without the wonderful trademark desert drone. To the newcomer, the fact that there are four lead vocalists won’t be immediately obvious, as all have similar registers. But while Ibrahim Ag Alhabib delivers seven of the twelve tracks, it’s Abdallah Ag Alhousseyni who wrote and sings the loping early highlight “Mano Dayak” – the sort of thing Adams probably wishes he’d penned. In his atmospheric sleeve notes, the producer graphically recalls how Mohammed Ag Itlale ‘Japonais’ rejoined the group with “Ahimana”, a piece of spontaneous music-making typical of the way this band work as a fluid musical extended family. You can even hear the fire crackling and somebody’s mobile (?) going off during the opening acoustic guitar strums of Ibrahim’s lovely, trancey “Ikyadarh Dim”. The slinky wah-wah guitar funk of “Assouf” is how Sly Stone might have sounded if he’d had a stint in an Algerian refugee camp, lost a relative in a recent war and sung in Tamashek.

As with most contemporary albums, there are perhaps one or two too many tracks, but as a unified piece of work, Aman Iman sounds like an early highlight of 2007. It’s gratifying that, like their compatriot and kindred spirit, the late great Ali Farka Toure, Tinariwen haven’t deserted their desert home of Adrar des Iforas, and the music they make still evocatively reflects their love of it. A move to Paris or even the Malian capital Bamako – where this was recorded – would surely diminish what makes them special.

The RZA Presents: Afro Samurai (The Soundtrack)

Talib Kweli, Big Daddy Kane, Q-Tip and GZA are among the list of hip-hop artists featured on the soundtrack for the upcoming animated miniseries, "Afro Samurai," which premieres on Spike TV next year.

As SOHH previously reported, Samuel L. Jackson lends his voice to the lead animated character, Afro, a black samurai searching for the gunman who killed his father. The series is based on a Talashi Okazaki novel of the same name.

The soundtrack, which is overseen by Wu Tang Clan's RZA, will also feature cuts from the extended Wu family. RZA also produced an original score for the show which will also be included in the soundtrack.

"As a fan of martial art and old Japanese Samurai movies, I have always wanted to be a part of such creativity and to have my own sp!ce added is even better," said RZA via a statement. "Many hip-hop artists and musicians from the late '80s to now have been inspired by this form of entertainment, and today's animators have been stimulated by hip-hop. But, usually these two forms of expression never meet in the same realm of artistry.

"'Afro Samurai' offers me the opportunity to mix the innovational world of hip-hop with the visual imagination of Japanese animation," he added. "The vibe of 'Afro Samurai' is so soulful and cool, that when I was asked to compose the series my creative juices immediately reacted. I felt it was something meant for me to do; in many ways Afro and myself share the same spirit."

"Afro Samurai" will premiere on Spike TV on January 4, while the soundtrack, which is on Koch Records, will hit shelves on January 16.

Having secured a healthy following around the Greater Toronto Area with their impassioned live performances and tireless work ethic, this duo have crafted their finest work to date with this offering, a steely effort brimming with canny, streetwise commentary and some of the most breathtakingly gritty production to ever grace a Canadian release.

While my superlative-laden introduction should already have prompted you to purchase this release, I suppose I should do this record justice with more ink. Imagine a crash collision between the militant poetics of Tragedy Khadafi, the bleak desperation of Capone N Noreaga's "War Report" and the cavernous cadences of vintage Wu-Tang set atop the unabashed, bare-bones grime of RZA circa "Liquid Swordz," or perhaps Stoupe on "Violent By Design," and you might get an idea of what is on show here. The low-end on this baby is absolutely MONSTROUS, rumbling through the horns on "It's Up To You," the nightmarish Moog on "Bread Slaughter Water," the classic RZA vocal sample and ghostly strings on "Lost Souls," infusing everything with a sneering, ominous menace. Clearly influenced by classic Shaolin soul, the Arkeologists plow their way through 12 awe-inspiring ditties here, each one warping sultry vocal and wind samples into barbed, bloodstained compositions that recall dimly-lit, garbage-strewn street corners. Each track, from the subdued, melancholy guitar strums of "P.O.W.," obscuring samples of George W. Bush speeches to the mafia movie strut of "These Dayz" and "Pages" ingeniously recaptures the sounds that emanated from east coast pavements in the mid ‘90s. Far from being revisionist tomfoolery though, I can with absolute earnesty assert that much of the work here is on par with RZA, Allah Mathematics and 4th Disciple.

If you are already familiar with their previous output, the politically-inclined polemics of this duo should serve as no great surprise. However, while haphazard mixes (the lows dominating a little too much) and certain questionable production choices on Mizery's last solo platter tamed the fire of his conspiratorial exclamations, the crisper sound and sterling production of this record lends much thrust to Miz and Logikal's ferocious attacks on socio-political doctrine. A rousing call-to-arms, "It's Up To You" urges the listener to assume responsibility for the harsh realities that surround us, Miz and Logikal's passionate denunciations of the status quo proving a perfect foil for the warlike horns and droning bass of the track. "Humofaslave" is the desperate lament of the oppressed and marginalized, painting pastiches of graven, corpse-strewn streets and delving into the tortured psyche of a ravenous child of circumstance, while "P.O.W." expands upon themes of delirium and dementia that the Geto Boys explored years before. Channeling their rage and indignation with insistent urgency, the intense yet technically remarkable deliveries of each emcee more than live up to the lofty zeniths of their ideological pursuits.

I doubt you really need more convincing at this point. Everything about this release should excite you if you are a connoisseur of dirty, street-ready street rap- the filthy basslines, the murky mix, the voracious, unapologetic lyrical pyrotechnics that radiate with intelligence and ingenuity. Throw a hoodie on, lace those Timbs up, tuck a Super Soaker in your Dickies, get that ice grill on and prepare to get goosebumps. Buy this. Now. Please.

Compiled by Rhino HandMade and Warner Archives, WHO IN THE FUNK DO YOU THINK YOU ARE is a collection of songs from the albums "Back On the Right Track" and "Ain't But the One Way", as well as a few previously unreleased tracks, instrumentals, and demos. Some tracks in this late 70s and 80s collection were co-produced by George Clinton, Mark Davis, and Stewart Levine, thus giving the album a "P Funk" sound. This cd is a numbered limited edition of only 5000 produced.

None of the songs that appear in Who In the Funk Do You Think You Are appear in the new Sly and the Family Stone box set, entitled Collection. However, the latter consists of the first seven albums, as well as 33 previously unreleased songs scattered through out the set. Highly recommended by The Fifth Microphone©

Lil' Troy - Sittin' Fat Down South

Too new to be old school, too old to be new school, too ill to be passe and forgotten. It went platinum when it was released in '98 marking its place as a classic in the Houston hip hop scene.

From the Austin Chronicle:
"Hip-hop heads tend to write off Southside rap as bangin' beats backing tired tales of ballin' and booty. There's a kernel of truth to that, but if hip-hop's mission is still to "move the crowd," nothing gets those heads nodding and asses shaking quite like that rolling thunder of bass and breakbeats Southern mixmasters specialize in. That would be the "Fat" in the title of this Chronic-style Short Stop Records sampler, as producer Bruce "Grim" Rhodes slathers on the low end thicker than Southeast Texas mosquitoes. Lyrically, there's no new ground broken here (sample cuts: "Thugs Niggas," "Diamonds & Gold"), but a cross-section of H-Town MCs (Scarface, Willie D, Fat Pat, Big Ced, Ardis) keeps things fluid without reverting to cliché any more than their better-known New Orleans or Miami brethren. Bad Co. contributes some down-home R&B crooning on "Ain't No Luv," "Still a Bitch," and "Rollin'," and the posse cut "Wanna Be a Baller" -- a surprise regional hit this spring -- is at least twice as anthemic as anything Will Smith has come with lately. Still, Sittin' Fat Down South's biggest curveball is Scarface making like Big Daddy Kane on "Another Head Put to Rest," vividly illustrating, in true old-school style, the unfortunate fate befalling those who sleep on the Southside's skills."
